Sports dance club “Sūkurys” was founded in 1963 at the then Kaunas Trade Union Palace of Culture. The first leader of the club was the engineer T. Petreikis, who led “Sūkurys” for ten years. Since 1974 Jūratė and Česlovas Norvaišos became the leaders of the sports dance club. Under their leadership, “Sūkurys” was the first to establish contacts with the International Dance Federation and was the first in Lithuania to promote dance as a sport before the proclamation of Lithuania’s Independence.
More than a couple of world sports dance champions have grown up in the sports dance club “Sūkurys”. Every year, the members of the “Sūkurys” club win more than one Lithuanian champion title at the Republic Championships. In 1965, Sūkurys initiated and started organizing the first international dance competition in Lithuania, “Gintarinė pora” (Eng. “The Amber Couple”). Jūratė and Česlovas Norvaišos were awarded the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas IV for merits in Lithuanian sports, and the sports dance club “Sūkurys”, which celebrated the 50th anniversary of its creative activity in 2013, was repeatedly awarded letters of honor by the Lithuanian Government for popularizing sports dances and achievements.
